In the monumental time-based work participating in the neolithic form of sun-gazing, Sunday catches a vibrant series of sunrises and sunsets on 35mm cinema film. With the water as a stage, the disc of the sun arcs above the horizon, unveiling itself by degrees, and at night submerges, heaving sighs of color. These transitional moments are condensed so that the six-minute event of the sun rise or set happen in a third of the time, allowing the event to spiral visibly over the animated surface of the water. Birds and boats dash by in triple time. The color space of these sacred moments, cyclical and never ending, create a new form of landscape in which color is the experienced landmark. Friedman captures a movement that is both relentlessly predicable and awesomely unexpected. The large-scale LED screens are installed over a neutral gray wall, which creates a dynamic contrast and immersive installation.
